In April, six former Auburn athletes were honored with inclusion among the Tiger Trail Class of 2018. Among those six athletes were football stars Freddie Smith and Ben Tamburello. Smith played with the Tigers from 1976 to 1979 and recorded 528 career tackles, which stands as a school record to this day. He was originally recruited as a running back but was then asked to play defense out of necessity. He was never an imposing physical presence in regard to his size but earned the nickname Fast Freddie for his agility.
Tamburello, meanwhile, was an All-American center in 1985-86 who went on to play four seasons in the National Football League with the Philadelphia Eagles. The other four members of the Tiger Trail Class of 2018 were golf coach Kim Evans, track and field stars Jerry Smith and Susan Nunnelly, and women's basketball player DeWanna Bonner. All six former athletes will have plaques with their names on them displayed on the sidewalks in downtown Auburn.
